Faked Semiconductor Chips Being Distributed In Large Volume
Amid shortage in supply of semiconductor chips is aggravating since October, a large volume of forged semiconductor chips are being distributed in the domestic market. These illegal chips, in particular, are faked with their entire circuits rather than simple forgery such as remarking, possibly resulting in a severe damage to electronic appliance makers and consumers.
Industry sources said on December 23 that a domestic appliance maker called 'A' reportedly purchased a large quantity of power management chips of Analog Devices via a British distributor, finding that 3,000 units of them were faulty chips.
Analog Devices Korea confirmed that those chips were illegally reproduced products. \"Faked power management chips and analogue/digital converters began to be distributed in China earlier this year, but those are the first forged chips that were found in Korea,\" said an officer at Analog Devices.
"Presently two illegal cases were reported in Korea, one is the distribution of defected wafers and the other is the unlawful copies of circuits,\" added the officer.
Similar cases were also found with power management chips of National Semiconductor. National Semiconductor Korea recently said that it identified illegally faked chips on the market.
To minimize damages, the two chip fabricators urged PC and appliance makers to use authorized products by purchasing through their normal distribution channels.
Industry observers, however, believe that faked semiconductor chips are spread in products of other makers. They are particularly converged on analogue semiconductors such as power management chips and analogue/digital converters which are experiencing serious shortage in supply.
\"Faked chips are surging taking advantage of the shortage in supply of sterling products and they pose damages due mainly to procurement through abnormal distribution channels by PC and apparatus makers,\" said an industry observer. \"The situation should immediately be curbed to prevent further damages on the part of consumers and exports.\"

An opening ceremony of our educational center was held on last Feb. 1, while our officials, employees and the persons from the companies of co-operation attended it. We have opened the Suwon Business Support Center on last Feb. 1. The Suwon Business Support Center established as a part of supporting efficient business and technology to customers in Suwon, Bundang and nearby can handle all the same business as the headquarters by connecting high-speed networking to the headquarters.
